One of the major tourist attraction in Mysore city is the Mysore Zoo. Mysore Zoo is a 157-acre land which is located near the Palace in Mysore, India. which is officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. Mysore Zoo which is one of the most popular attraction. It is one of the oldest Zoos in India and it is the home to wide range of species. It was established in 1982. This Zoo has wide range of animals.
The Zoo was opened to the public in 1902, and now includes a bandstand and an artificial lake. The Zoo was handed over to the Forest Department in 1972. The Zoo had completed 100 years in 1992. The Centenary celebrations were held in 1990-91. During centenary celebrations various developmental activities were initiated such as renovation & modification of entrance gate, Hospital building, Walk Through Reptiles, etc., The bust of Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar, founder of Mysore Zoo was unveiled.
As the Maharaja was an animal lover he took special care to ensure that all the enclosures for the animals were spacious and aesthetically built. The enclosures are in use to this day. An adoption scheme introduced in the early 2000s at Mysore Zoo has been a success, with Celebrities, Institutions, and animal lovers contributing directly to the welfare of the zoo inmates.
Zoo is currently a home for many animals. You can come across various animals like Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Tigers, Lions, Baboons and white rhinoceroses.The Mysore Zoo is located at a distance of about 3 km from the City Bus Stand and 2 km from the Mysore Palace. The Entry fee for Adults is 50 Rs. and for child is 20 Rs. and during Saturday/Sunday/Govt. Holidays Entry fee for Adults is 60 Rs. and for Child is 30 Rs.
The Birds or the animals will be active in morning hours, visitors who visit the Zoo around 11.00 a.m to 3.00 p.m often complaint that they could not spot out all the animals due to severe hot conditions animals may be slept or they may take rest during these timings. So the best time to visit the Zoo is in the morning session before 11 a.m or after 3 p.m so that they can see all the animals. Senior Citizen’s or the Physically disabled persons will be taken in the vehicle to visit the animals.
